by Ravi Zacharias
Everyone has a unique life story to share. This book presents Ravi Zacharias’s journey. From reading his story, I discovered a greater narrative of His Story written into the life of this incredible man.
I came to know of who Ravi Zacharias and his international ministry, RZIM, when I was searching for responses to give my friend who asked difficult questions about the Christian faith. After watching a screening of one of his sermons, I found his reflections helpful in provoking my thoughts and insights. Ravi Zacharias is a prominent preacher known for his teachings on apologetics. He has written numerous books in defence of the Christian faith such as Can Man Live Without God and Jesus Among Other Gods.
Being widely acclaimed as one of the great current Christian thinkers, I was curious about his journey of faith. Walking from East to West is his memoir which invites you to follow him through his journey from a childhood in India to his work and residence in Atlanta, Georgia with his family.
What is most notable for readers and significantly important to me, is his constant emphasis on how God is actively working in the background. He highlights how God is orchestrating circumstances and opportunities to shape His children to be a truer reflection of His divine glory and goodness. And most often, we are completely unaware of his work in our lives.
This book is a humbling account to read. Zacharias does not shy away from discussing his flaws and weaknesses. He shares how in his childhood, he would crash wedding parties, play pranks on his friends and plan how to escape church services to play cricket.
In a definitive point of crisis in his life, Zacharias recalls how a deep gnawing sense of worthlessness and loneliness led him to dose himself with poison in a suicide attempt. He felt that he was a disappointment to everybody, especially his father. But God was not done with him.
I recommend this book to readers who seek to know how God works for the good of those who love him and is called to his purpose (Romans 8:28) with Zacharias as a living example. Come and discover how Zacharias grew more and more convinced that Jesus is the only one that could offer you life and life to the fullest.
This book is a poignant reminder that God fashions us to His calling often in ways we do not expect Him. In his conclusion, Zacharias definitely affirms, “There is no greater discovery than seeing God as author of your destiny.”
