This book is a book for all seasons! Timeless and easy to keep by the bedside for when one needs deep encouragement (like when you wake up at 4 am!) or when everything is going well. I found that I could read and re-read it with fresh reminders of God’s wisdom to be gleaned each time. It is a book that should not be read in one sitting but be dipped into and pondered, savoured and hopefully internalized!
Psalms 120-134 provide the meat for Peterson’s aim to develop discipleship in an instant society. What I especially liked was how he gave the background and then fleshed out the truths in scripture and fused it into prayer. One is challenged and renewed. Challenged on how to live and see things from God’s perspective, that is.
Petersen who translated The Message is well known for his use of plain language. He does this effectively as it sets the context in our every day world, thereby making it immediately applicable and perhaps, forcing us to see things in a different way as well. Peterson’s intent is to help people listen to God speak to them from scripture which would then allow them to answer God personally and honestly through lives of prayer. It worked for me!
