Vicar Writes 9 Jan

The tree was decorated and the lights were put up. The gifts were laid out and the room was softly lit while Christmas tunes played softly through the speakers. In the back corner, a lavish buffet spread of North Indian delights lay waiting to be savoured.

Familiar sights and sounds of a Christmas party? Yes, definitely (with the Indian food adding a distinct local flavor). This was a Christmas dinner, specially organized by St James’ Church for the construction workers who have been working very hard in the construction of our new church building over at 1, Leedon Road.
This event aimed to bless these workers for all they have done, and to give them an opportunity to experience Christmas. It was truly a wonderful occasion. The night was filled with great food, a lucky draw and bingo games (where EVERYONE was a winner), as well as Christmas carols by our very own JYM Choir. There was also a photo booth where our guests could get their photographs taken and printed on the spot, with envelopes available for them to send the pictures back to their families.

The responses from the guests were heartwarming too. They enjoyed themselves and you could see that they really appreciated all that was done for them. Personally, I felt that the looks on their faces made the night so worth it. Christmas is about giving and the greatest joy comes from doing just that. It was amazing to see all their happy faces.

The organizing team would like to thank all who contributed to this event: from those who helped with the gifts, the decorations, ushering and serving food, to the JYM Choir. Every contribution is significant. And it would not have been the same without you; the body of Christ coming together to use their individual gifting to be a blessing (1 Cor 12: 12-30).

This dinner is but a glimpse of we can do as these brothers (and a sister!) continue to work on our project. As they build God’s house, may they continue to see a difference through the people of God (1 John 3: 16-20) and the hope we have in Him.

Let us continue to pray for them, and to be ‘salt and light’ to them especially in the remaining months of their work at 1 Leedon Road.
