About Us

The Family Life Ministry (FLM) is a community outreach arm of St James' Church, which seeks to strengthen families and foster caring community bonds.

During our FLM Team Retreat in Nov 2009, the team had identified Isaiah 37:31b as the theme of our Value Propositions:

Isaiah 37:31b "... will take root below and bear fruit above."
            i.     To Empower Families for the challenge of the times.
ii.     To Strengthen Discipling of Families in Christ-likeness.
iii.     To Promote Unconditional Love <AGAPE>.

Currently, the ministry oversees 4 areas of ministries: Marriage, Parenting, Counselling, and Men's Ministry. A dedicated team serves in FLM, and it is currently being led by Carolin Tan.

Marriage
We run the Marriage Preparation Course annually. Couples are advised to sign-up early and inform us and the Vicar's office if you intend to have the church marry you.

We are aiming to run The Marriage Course in Apr next year. This course is helpful for those already married and seeking for renewal or deepening of their relationships. We will also be running a Renewal of Wedding Vows Service in May. Couples who wish to renew their vows should have gone through The Marriage Course at least once within the last 5 years.

Parenting
As parenting is an important part of the family life, the FLM had been conducting parenting workshops over the last 4 years. Our objectives were to help parents understand the 21st Century parenting issues in our society, to create awareness, and to integrate with the counselling arm to provide post-workshop counselling sessions for parents.

Men's Ministry
This ministry encourages men to grow in the faith and integration of that with their work and family responsibilities. We organise talks, encourages men to attend relevant seminars elsewhere, help form Teleios Men discipleship groups and organise special events like the Father and Son Camp
.

Counseling Ministry
The Counselling Ministry seeks to minister to human needs at a psychodynamic and clinical level, closely aligned to a biblical framework. Our services are open to all.

We also provides the Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis (T-JTA) Assessment to members who are keen on knowing their own personality traits better. Follow-up counseling sessions are also available for those who wish to work with the counselor on what was discovered through the T-JTA.

The Counselling Ministry also seeks to equip the church (lay and leadership) in basic helping skills and referral procedures, as well as skills in facilitating the understanding of temperaments.

Family Life Month
FLM also organises SJC's Family Life Month in May, where special emphases is given to families, throughout all our Services. Guest speakers are invited to cover topics which may address the family unit, and possibly issues which some families are facing.
