Vicar’s write 6 March 2016

At the Last Supper, Jesus told His disciples “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34–35) LOVE is the defining mark of a disciple and there are many practical opportunities to practice this even as God blesses St James’ Church.

Have you noticed that our E2 and E3 services getting more crowded? Thank God in 2015, we added 6% to our weekend service attendances. In Jan 2016, the attendance for E2 and E3 have increased nearly 18%, averaging 313 and 329 respectively! I rejoice that the Mandarin congregation is also experiencing good growth.

Furthermore, the Teleios Todds and Teleios Kids ministries are seeing growing attendances requiring more space to disciple the children. More Christian Education courses are in the pipeline and the upcoming Building Faith Foundation class has a registration of 34 as I write. This is the Lord’s work and our great blessing even as we faithfully do what He calls us to do: love one another with a genuine love.

More love will be needed as we learn to steward and share our facilities to meet the growing needs which accompany fast growing congregations. As we cannot add spaces endlessly, we are re-looking at reconfiguring and reclaiming spaces where possible to ease the crunch. Pray for the Building Maintenance Sub-Committee and PCC to have God’s wisdom as we look into this.

As we grapple with this, I am thinking of Phil 2:5; Paul urged that we are to have the same mind of Christ, in humility let us prefer the needs of others. Two immediate suggestions for our prayerful response, sparked by the growing crunch experienced for carpark spaces and rooms:

1. If at all possible, do consider free and legal parking options at Leedon Park or the paid surrounding carparks. It involves a little sacrifice and even cost, but this is a physical expression of love in action.
2. As we need to cater to growing ministry needs, some small groups like DGs and Cells may have to explore other meeting venues. Please extend grace should you be in this position.

If you also have suggestions on creative use of spaces, do drop me an email. May we love one another in practical ways like this for the glory of God!
